Blinds cover windows and doors and have lots of benefits. They will keep the sun out during the day and keep you warm and cosy in the evening. They reduce the drafts that you can sometimes get from a window as well as give you the privacy you want. Most types of blinds can be fully open, shut or partially open or shut to give you the amount of light and privacy you want at that time. A lot of people choose blinds instead of curtains as they are less expensive, give you more versatility due to being able to have them partially open or shut, are easy to keep clean and maintain, as well as giving your room a modern and contemporary feel. There are so many different styles, colours and materials to choose from you will always be able to find a blind to suit your needs and decor.
A wooden blind is a window covering made up from slats of horizontal wood or MDF which has a plastic vinyl layer. The slats can be adjusted using a cord or handle at the side of the blind to let in or shut out the natural light. The whole blind can be lifted by a cord system or mechanism at the side enabling you to have the blind completely open so you can see the whole window and frame or partially open if you are looking for some light to enter the room or for some privacy. Wooden blinds are also referred to as Venetian blinds.
Wooden blinds are a modern and practical way of covering your window or door giving you complete flexibility on the amount of visibility and light you want to enter a room. The wooden or wooden style slats cover your window completely when fully closed and slot underneath each other at the top of the window and door frame when fully open, which then exposes your whole window or door opening. They can make a window or door a contemporary or stand out feature in your room, whichever you want.
They are easy to open and close with the side pulley mechanism or cord and the slats are easily adjusted with a cord or handle to the side.
When you are thinking about window coverings in a smaller room, curtains can sometimes overpower the room as they sit to the side of the window or door frame taking up some of the wall space. Wooden blinds can be fitted inside or outside of a window recess making your room look bigger, contemporary and modern.
If you have a few windows in a room then curtains can again be overpowering and wooden blinds are a simplistic window covering that repeat throughout your decor.
Wooden blinds can be a cheaper option compared to curtains, especially good quality material curtains. You will also find that you won’t have the temptation to keep replacing them as you would with curtains if you have a change of colour scheme in your room.
Wooden blinds are fitted inside or outside of a window recess and are opened by a safe pulley mechanism or cord which can be fitted to either side for ease of opening and closing. The pulley mechanism or cord pulls the slats up into the top of the recess when open or over the window or door opening when the blind is closed. The pulley mechanism or cord takes the weight out of opening a wooden blind although this increases as the size of the window and blind increases.
A wooden blind opens and closes using either a pulley cord system or mechanism that can be made to fit either side of the blind. A sperate cord or wand is fitted enabling you to adjust the slats if you want to open, close or partially open or close the slats.
100% wooden blinds come in many wood colours and MDF Vinyl blinds come in wood effect, white, cream, beige, grey or bright colours. The colour you choose depends on your rooms colour scheme and how much you want your blind to stand out.
Wooden blind slats generally range from 0.5 inches up to 2.5 inches wide. The slat size affects the finished look of your window or door and the amount of light you want to allow through when open or partially open or closed. If you have a smaller window then smaller slats tend to look better and larger slat widths if you have a larger window or door. Smaller slat widths will let in more light when closed compared to the wider slat widths.
The weight of your wooden blind will depend on the width and depth of your window or door and whether it is a 100% wood or an MDF wood style blind. A good blind company will be able to advise you on the maximum width and depth a wooden blind can be and if necessary will be able to advise you if you should think about having 2 blinds covering one window if it is too wide for one blind.
Wooden blinds can be cut to size but it is a difficult process that often goes wrong. It is really tricky to ensure that each slat is cut to the same width and with a perfect edge, so if your window or door isn’t a standard size then we would always recommend you have them made to measure. Made to measure wooden blinds often don’t cost much more compared to standard blinds that you buy from a shop and they will be guaranteed to fit the width and depth of your window or door.
Wooden blinds look and work best resting on a window sill or ledge when they are closed. If there isn’t a window sill then you should measure the length to the point where you want the blinds to reach which is normally the bottom of the window or door opening. Made to measure wooden blinds will be the exact depth of your window so when they are fully closed you won’t have spare bunched up slats at the bottom making them look professional, contemporary and a perfect fit.
Made to measure wooden blinds can be manufactured to fit your specific window or door opening and recess with only an ‘mm’ of your window opening not being covered by the blind either side when it is shut. Professional blind companies will come out to your home and measure your windows and doors for you, and come back and fit them when they have been made. If there are any problems when fitting them then this is the responsibility of the blind company to rectify as they have measured them on your behalf. If the blind company is not in your area then they should advise you how to measure your window or door and you can then send them your measurements for your made to measure blinds. Good blind companies will not charge you for their measuring and fitting service so always ask this when you speak to them.
Off the shelf, brought wooden blinds come in standard window widths and lengths and they won’t fit your window as perfectly as a made to measure wooden blind. The choice of material and colour won’t be as expansive as you will get if you decide to have them made to measure by a professional blind company. Wooden door blinds are not as easy to buy as standard so if you decide to have a wooden blind fitted for a door opening then we would advise you have them made to measure. Professional blind companies will have a range of door blinds which can also be fitted to your PVC window frame ensuring they don’t swing when they are closed or when the door is open.

Yes, wooden blinds can be fitted to a door and they can look amazing, giving your room a feeling of great height from the top of your door to the floor when fully closed or the slats partially open. If your door opens inwards then you have to be careful not to open the door when the blind is shut so this is always a consideration when you are choosing the type of blind to fit your door opening. If this is the case then a wooden blind that can be fitted to your PVC window frame is always a good option.
Yes, wooden blinds can be fitted inside of a window or door frame recess. Inside mounted wooden blinds give you the cleanest look and they can be mounted as deep or as shallow into the window or door recess as you want.
Wooden blinds can be fitted outside of a window or door recess and they can extend past the frame if you want them to.

Most professional blind companies will offer free; measuring, making and fitting service to make the whole process really easy for you.
Wooden blinds will keep a room warmer compared to not having any window covering, however, bear in mind that the slats will let some air through from the inside of your window.
Wooden blinds can keep a room cooler as they block the direct sunlight from entering when they are fully closed or the slats partially open. A lot of people choose wooden blinds for conservatories or sunrooms as they give the best of both worlds allowing some light to still shine through.

Wooden blinds now are safe for children as long as the pulley cord is child safe so always check this before you buy. Most made to measure blinds will have this safety feature automatically whereby a child-safe cord will separate at a certain point if there is any weight applied to it which is then easily rejoined.
Most wooden blinds maximum width will be 3000mm (3 Metres) but a good and reputable blind company will advise you on this. If your window recess is a lot wider than this then you can consider having 2 blinds fitted which will seamlessly join together in the middle giving you the look you want.
Most wooden blinds can be made to fit an average door height. A lot will depend on the width of your door or window opening as well as if the opening is wide and there is a large drop this can make a wooden blind too heavy to fit safely and open and close. Again a good professional blind company will be able to advise you on this.
It is hard to see through a wooden blind when they are fully closed as the slats gaps aren’t wide enough to see through. If the slats are partially open it depends on which way they are tilted as to how much someone passing by will see.
A window should have a minimum recessed space of 2 3/8″ for an inside mounted wooden blind. You should measure the width of the window from the top of the opening to the sill in 3 different points and use the smallest dimension for the width of the blind. Most manufacturers will normally deduct up to 1/4″ – 1/2″ but it’s a good idea to check this with them before you give your measurements for your order. Alternatively, we would advise you to use a blind company that offer a free measuring and fitting service as if there is a problem when the blind comes to be fitted they will rectify it.
Wooden blinds will vary in price depending on the material used and the size of the blind. Buying off the shelf standard size blinds may be slightly cheaper, however, even standard sized windows are not always the same and they will all vary by mm’s so a made to measure blind will fit your window opening perfectly and will last for years.
If wooden blinds are fitted properly when they are installed then they will be really safe and secure. The screws may need tightening in the wall fixings after a few years and its always a good idea to check this if it isn’t feeling secure. You should dust the slats on your wooden blind regularly and wipe them with a damp cloth periodically to keep them looking new and fresh.
We would always advise you to buy wooden blinds made to measure to ensure they fit your window opening and recess perfectly. You can cut wooden blinds to size, however, it’s tricky to do and will never look as clean cut as if they were made to measure.
