Elegant, Made-To-Measure Vertical Blinds

Looking for shade and privacy blinds for your home’s windows that offers effortless elegance?

Select Blinds are proud to offer made-to-measure vertical blinds in Glasgow and throughout Central Scotland, with free measuring and fitting service.

Crafted with a series of vertical strips, known as slats or louvres, vertical blinds can be adjusted to let in as much light as you desire at various angles across 180 degrees. The louvres move as one to ensure a uniform approach. The beauty of the varied angle of the adjustment is that you can still let light into the room but reduce the glare by angling it away in the opposite direction.

Vertical blinds can also retract and fold away at either side of the window, with the blinds usually split in the middle. This gives you easy access to clean the window without needing to remove the blinds.

We can supply both narrow slat vertical blinds and wide slat vertical blinds, dependent on your taste, to provide the privacy your room deserves.

Whether you’re looking for vertical blinds for your living room, kitchen, office, bathroom or bedroom, we have a selection of colours, patterns and materials which can complement your space.

Our latest special offer is 3 vertical blinds for £149, exclusively from our Luxury Kansas range (max size 72″ x 72″)

Vertical Blinds FAQ

Find out everything you need to know about Vertical Blinds and if they are the window or door covering for you.

Vertical blinds have vertical lengths of fabric called vanes or slats that are clipped into a sliding track at the top of your window recess and operated with a wand or chain. The slats can be tilted or fully opened or closed for light and privacy. When a vertical blind is fully open the slats hang over each other at either or both ends of your window recess leaving your window fully exposed and the natural light entering your room.

  • Vertical blinds can be made to fit wide or narrow width windows or doors
  • They are lightweight
  • Vertical blinds can be made to fit any depth of window or door
  • They can come in many different colours and patterns
  • They can be made in different materials to suit the room they are being fitted in, including blackout material
  • They are easy to maintain and just need to be dusted and occasionally wiped with a damp cloth
  • Vertical blinds don’t tend to collect dust compared to curtains or other types of blinds
  • They are great for any room; bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, playrooms, conservatories, kitchens, toilets, bathrooms, hallways, landings, door windows and doors
  • They give you privacy in overlooked rooms and can be tilted to give you some privacy, fully closed for full privacy and fully opened for full visibility from your window or door
  • They can be tilted to prevent the full sunlight from entering a room, reducing glare from the sun and protecting your furniture and carpets from fading
  • They are easily opened and closed with minimal weight to them
  • Their versatility allows you to have them completely open or shut
  • The opening and closing mechanisms can be fitted to either side of the blind
  • They can be made to open from one side of your window or door frame or they can open in the centre of your window or door
  • The opening and closing mechanisms are child and pet safe
  • Vertical blinds can be a cheaper alternative to curtains and other types of blinds
  • Vertical blinds are a lightweight and versatile window or door covering and are stylish and practical for any room in your home or business
  • You can control the amount of natural light that enters a room giving you full, partial privacy or a full view from your window or door
  • They are extremely lightweight making them easy to open and close with the wand or chain mechanism which takes the weight out of the vanes/slats, compared to wooden blinds or heavy curtains
  • Vertical blinds can be a subtle window covering in contemporary colours and tones, or bright and patterned to make a statement
  • They are extremely versatile and can be opened and closed to either side or to part in the middle of your window or door
  • They are subtle and don’t take over a room like curtains can do and they are fitted inside of your window or door recess, making your room feel lighter and bigger

Vertical blinds have a sliding mechanism at the top which each vane/slat is attached to and this allows for them to be opened, closed and tilted, you can have a door or window open or closed when they are in any position. They can be fitted inside or outside of a window recess although they work better if fitted inside as it allows the vanes/slats to be tilted. They are opened and closed by a child-safe pulley mechanism which can be fitted to either side of the blind and the wand allows you to tilt the vanes/slats to the angle you want.

Vertical blinds can be opened and closed to either side using a chain mechanism and they can also be made to open from the centre and leaving the vanes/slats on each side of the window or door frame and these are known as split stack vertical blinds. A wand or chain which can be fitted to either side of the blind and is used to tilt the vanes/slats to the position you want them in, giving you full or partial privacy or allowing you to block out the suns glare without having them fully closed. The vanes/slats need to be open when you retract the blind to allow a full view from your window or door.

Vertical blinds are made with a synthetic polyester fabric which is durable, doesn’t fade and is easy to clean. Vertical blinds can be made in blackout material if you want it, although be aware the slats do allow some light to enter a room.

Vertical blinds come in a huge range of colours and patterns, they can be light subtle tones to complement your room, darker colours to be a contrast or bright colours and patterns to really stand out.

Vertical blinds are so lightweight they are a great option for covering wide and tall windows or patio doors and they are still really easy to open and close.

It isn’t advisable to cut vertical blinds to size as the vane/slat material will fray and it is really difficult to cut each vane/slat to the exact same size. A good and reputable blind company will come out to take your exact measurements, provide you with a quote and will make your vertical blinds to your bespoke window or door size. They will also offer a free fitting service which means you can sit back and relax whilst your new blinds are fitted.

In most cases, blinds look and work best when they are resting on a window sill or in the case of doors reaching just 1-2 mm above the floor. If you are fitting vertical blinds inside a window recess which is the best option then they will need to be the length reaching the window sill to ensure they fall correctly when they are closed.

Made to measure vertical blinds will be made to fit your specific window or door recess and opening with only a ‘mm’ of the window or door opening not being covered by the blind at the bottom when it is shut. Good blind companies will come out to your home and measure your window opening for you and then come back and fit them when they have been made. If the blind company is not in your area then they will advise you how to measure your window and you can send them your measurements for them to make them ‘made to measure’ blinds for you.

‘Off the shelf’ vertical blinds can be brought and will come in standard widths and lengths which don’t often fit your window or door perfectly like ‘made to measure’ vertical blinds will. The colour and pattern options for ‘off the shelf’ vertical blinds will also be minimal so you won’t have as much choice and variation to choose from.

A lot of people think that vertical blinds only come in whites or creams, however, made to measure vertical blinds can be made in a huge range of colours, patterns and material, including blackout. When you are choosing your colour you need to think how much light you want to come into the room as darker colours and patterns will block out more of the natural light when fully closed.

Vertical blind blackout fabric reduces the light entering a room from outside so they are great for bedrooms, especially if you work nights and want to reduce the amount of light during the day when you are trying to sleep or for young children, however, the vanes/slats will still allow some light to enter through.

Vertical blinds can be made in any colour or pattern, they are great in natural and lighter tones and colours as well as really bright or patterned material, making them a really versatile option for any room in your home or business.

Vertical blinds can be ‘made to measure’ any type or size of window or door and they are a really great option for any room however big or small your window or door is.

You can fit vertical blinds yourself, however, it can be tricky, especially if you have a wide window or door opening. Good and reputable blind companies will measure your window, make your blinds to fit perfectly and then come back and fit them for you. This takes away the stress of measuring them incorrectly and/or fitting them. Their blind fitters will be highly experienced and have the tools and know-how to quickly and efficiently fit your blinds whilst you sit back and have a cup of tea.

You can have blackout vertical blinds but unlike some other blind types they won’t block out the natural light completely because of the vertical vanes/slats.

Vertical blinds are really versatile and can fit into any type and size of window. They are especially good for wide and tall windows or doors due to them being so lightweight.

Vertical blinds are a great option for any room in your home or business. They really frame a window or door in a contemporary way and compared to curtains they don’t overpower a room. They make rooms look brighter, bigger and lighter due to the minimal amount of fabric used. Their versatility allows you full or minimal privacy without blocking out all of the natural light or view from your window or door.

Vertical blinds can suit any type of property, new or old and are a great and versatile option for homes and businesses. If you have lots of windows in a room they look great and don’t overpower it as curtains can sometimes do.

Vertical blinds are a great option for patio or bi-fold doors and can be fully opened to either side or from the middle easily due to them being very lightweight.

Vertical blinds can be fitted outside of a window or door recess, however, they won’t work as well as if they were fitted inside. Fitting them inside your window or door recess allows you to tilt the vanes/slats when they are closed to give you some privacy and to block some of the suns glare from entering a room.

We would always advise that you buy your vertical blinds from a reputable blind company. A specialist blind company will have a larger choice of material, colours and patterns and will offer a measuring, made to measure and fitting service which allows you to choose your blind and then sit back and relax knowing that they will be fitted perfectly for you.

Vertical blinds will keep a room warmer than if they weren’t there, however they won’t insulate your room as much as thicker curtains or roller blinds do due to them having less fabric.

Vertical blinds will keep a room cool as they can be closed or the vanes/slats tilted to reduce the amount of sunlight that enters a room.

Vertical blinds are a great option for an office or shop as they are easy to keep clean, open, shut and the vanes/slats can be tilted to reduce the suns glare on screens during the day. They offer a minimal look and can be fully shut to prevent anyone from seeing inside when an office or shop is shut.

Vertical blinds are a great option for any type of property; domestic, commercial or office environments and can be made to complement any age of property.

Vertical blinds can give you full or partial privacy by tilting the angle of the vanes/slats to suit your needs. They are perfect for rooms which face out onto a road, neighbour or another building as you don’t have to fully block out the natural light when you want some privacy.

Vertical blinds can be partially opened or closed and if it is a sunny day and you want to block some of the light out then tilting the vanes/slats allow you to do this, as well as giving you privacy.

Made to measure vertical blinds will have child-safe chains which separate at a specific point if there is any weight applied which are then easily rejoined.

Vertical blinds can be any width due to them being so lightweight so they are often the choice for patio or bi-folding doors.

Vertical blinds can be made to fit any depth of window or doors due to them being so lightweight and easy to open and close.

It depends on what material is used to make a vertical blind as to whether you can see through them. You can’t see through a blackout vertical blind and most vanes/slats you wouldn’t be able to see directly through unless they were made from very thin material.

Vertical blinds vary in price depending on the material used and the size of the window or door opening. Shop around and don’t be afraid to say to a company you have had a cheaper quote and ask them if they can match their price. Ask them why there is a difference in price as good blind companies will be able to explain this. Buying off the shelf standard sized blinds will be slightly cheaper, however, there aren’t many windows which are a standard size so made to measure blinds will fit your window opening perfectly and they will be better quality, lasting you for many years.

Vertical blinds are really easy to clean and maintain, you just need to dust them regularly and every once in a while you can wipe them over with a damp cloth to keep them looking new and fresh.

We would always advise you to get vertical blinds ‘made to measure’ to ensure they fit your window opening and recess perfectly. You will also have a larger choice of material, colours and patterns to choose from when buying from a reputable blind company.

  • They are made to measure your window and its recess perfectly
  • They will let minimal light in through the side of the window when they are closed due to them being made to fit your window or door
  • You can choose from a huge range of material, colours and patterns to match your style and decor
  • They don’t cost much more, if anything at all, compared to standard off the shelf vertical blinds
  • Good and reputable blind companies will offer a measuring and fitting service and if they aren’t right when they are fitted they will replace them at no cost to you, with no DIY disasters

Vertical blinds look modern and contemporary and don’t overlap at either side of your window or door frame when they are open as curtains do. Curtains can make a room and a window look smaller and can overpower it, especially if there are several windows in the room with curtains. Vertical blinds offer an efficient and cost-effective solution as a window covering, making a room feel more open, they offer a break from direct sunlight in the day, privacy when you want it and full privacy when they are fully closed. Vertical blinds are easy to maintain and keep clean compared to curtains.
